2 On 2 Open Ice Challenge is a 1995 arcade hockey game by Midway, playable today through MAME. It came out during a time when arcade sports games were all about fast action and exaggerated physics, and it fits right into that rowdy, over the top style Midway was known for in the mid 90s.
You control a team of two players, skating up and down the ice to score goals against your opponent. The main objective is simple: outscore the other team before time runs out. Signature mechanics include body checking opponents with enough force to send them spinning comically through the air, and firing slapshots that ricochet wildly off the boards and other players. The game moves at a breakneck pace, and the difficulty ramps up quickly as AI opponents become more aggressive. It feels like playing hockey inside a pinball machine.
