Play 3D Galax Online
1987 Amiga action game. First-person shooter with polygonal graphics. Dodge and shoot waves of collision-based aliens in shifting formations. Includes asteroid-field bonus stages between waves.
3D Galax came out for the Amiga in 1987, published by Gremlin Graphics. It was one of those early polygonal first-person shooters that tried to push the hardware, a time when 3D was still a novelty and every frame felt like a technical achievement. The game didn't aim for realism; it aimed for presence, placing you right in the cockpit with a chunky, wireframe view of space.
You control a ship locked to the center of the screen, using the joystick to pivot and aim at enemies that swarm in from all sides. Your main objective is survival; you shoot down wave after wave of geometric aliens that drift and shift in complex, sometimes dizzying, patterns. The key mechanics are all about timing and spatial awareness: dodging incoming shapes that rely on collision detection rather than projectiles, and managing your shots carefully as targets move in and out of your narrow field of view. Between main waves, bonus stages set in asteroid fields break up the pace, offering a chance to rack up extra points while navigating tight corridors of spinning rocks. The difficulty is relentless, demanding quick reflexes and a good sense of prediction. It feels tense and isolating, like you're holding the line in a very minimalist, very hostile corner of the universe.
