Play Aero Star Online
Dodge enemy fire, collect power-ups, and blast through waves of foes in Aero Star, a vertical shooter for Game Boy from 1991.
I picked up Aero Star for the Game Boy back in 1991, a time when the handheld was packed with simple, focused games. It was developed by HAL Laboratory, the same folks who later made Kirby, but this was a straightforward vertical shooter. You don't get a long story or complex lore; it's just you, a small ship, and a lot of enemy fire coming down the screen.
You control a starfighter, moving it left and right to avoid waves of enemies and their bullet patterns. The main goal is to survive as long as possible, clearing stages by defeating a boss at the end of each one. Key mechanics include collecting power-ups that change your weapon, like spreading shots or lasers, and using a smart bomb to clear the screen when things get too crowded. The pacing is relentless; enemies pour in constantly, and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding sharp reflexes. It feels tense and rewarding when you slip through a narrow gap in the bullets and keep your run alive.
