Pick Charmander, wander through tall grass for hours, and argue with your rival about whose Rattata is truly in the top percentage. That weird little green Game Boy world still feels like home.
Pokemon Red came out for the Game Boy in 1996, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. It was one of those games that felt like it belonged entirely to the handheld, with its simple graphics and the way it turned every car ride or waiting room into a chance to play. It arrived in an era where portable games were often shorter, simpler experiences, but this one had a scope that felt huge for something you could carry in your pocket.
You control a young trainer who leaves their small town to travel the region, capturing wild creatures called Pokemon to add to your team. The main goal is to defeat the eight Gym Leaders, earn their badges, and ultimately challenge the Elite Four to become the Champion. You explore the world screen by screen, battling both wild Pokemon and other trainers to gain experience and strengthen your team. A big part of the game is the collection aspect, trying to find and catch all 150 Pokemon, which involves a lot of trading with friends who had the Blue version. The pacing is slow and deliberate, built on repetition and gradual growth, and the difficulty comes from managing your team's types and moves against increasingly tough opponents. It feels like building a small, trusted group of partners from almost nothing, and that connection is what makes it stick.
