Game Overview

Pokemon Red and Blue released for the Game Boy in 1998, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. It arrived during a period when handheld gaming was defined by simple, portable experiences, and this pair of games became a significant part of that landscape. You choose to play either the Red or Blue version, each with slight variations in which Pokemon you can find in the wild.

You control a young trainer who sets out to travel the region of Kanto, capturing wild Pokemon using Poke Balls and training them for turn-based battles against other trainers. The main goal is to defeat the eight Gym Leaders, overcome the Elite Four, and complete your Pokedex by finding all 151 creatures. Signature mechanics include the rock-paper-scissors style type matchups that dictate battle strategy, the need to manage your party's health and status conditions with items, and the requirement to trade Pokemon between the two versions to complete your collection. The pacing is deliberate, with considerable time spent leveling up your team in tall grass or caves, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly at certain gyms or rival fights. It feels like a long, personal journey where every captured Pokemon and hard-won badge is a small victory.
