Pokémon Sacred Gold and Storm Silver are basically the Johto games we all loved, but cranked up to eleven. You still start in New Bark Town, but everything’s been tweaked—gym leaders actually put up a fight now, wild Pokémon are way more varied (good luck finding anything weak early on), and some story bits just hit different. I got wrecked by Falkner’s buffed-up team more times than I’d like to admit.

It’s not just harder for the sake of it, though. The pacing’s smoother, and you’ll run into Pokémon from later generations mixed into routes naturally. No more waiting until Kanto for decent fire-types—Cyndaquil’s still solid, but now you’ve got options. Play it on an emulator if you don’t have a flash cart, but fair warning: bring your A-game.
