Pokemon Blue came out on the Game Boy in 1996, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. It was one of those games that felt inseparable from the hardware, a deep world you carried in your pocket with that dim green screen and the satisfying click of the cartridge. It arrived during a time when handheld games were often shorter, simpler affairs, but this one had the scope of a proper adventure.
You control a young trainer who sets out to document and collect creatures called Pokémon. Your main goal is to defeat the eight Gym Leaders, then the Elite Four, to become the regional champion. The gameplay loops through screen by screen exploration of routes and towns, random turn based battles in tall grass or caves, and managing a team of six monsters that gain experience and learn new moves. You spend a lot of time in menus, swapping party members, using items, and figuring out type matchups. The pacing is slow and deliberate, often demanding a lot of grinding to level up your team for the next challenge. It feels like a long, personal journey where every small victory matters.
