You control Sonic, a blue hedgehog who must stop the evil Dr. Robotnik from collecting the Chaos Emeralds and enslaving innocent animals. Signature mechanics include building and maintaining momentum to achieve blistering speeds, collecting golden rings for protection and extra lives, and using spin attacks to defeat enemies. The pacing is fast and demanding, with later stages punishing any lapse in timing. It feels like a rush of pure momentum, where every successful run is a reward in itself.
