Game Overview

All-Star Baseball 2004 on GBA is a solid little baseball sim that fits in your pocket—just don’t expect the full console experience. You get all 30 MLB teams and 800+ real players, which is wild for a Game Boy game, though franchise mode got left out. The batting mechanic’s kinda neat: you adjust this big triangle to aim your swing, and pitching uses something similar. Fielding’s simple—tap a direction to pick a base or let the CPU handle it if you’re lazy.

They added some nice touches this year, like pitchers actually throwing balls outside the strike zone (finally) and faster base runners pulling off doubles. The animations are smoother too—batters do their little walk-up routines, and stadiums have flags waving in the background. Oh, and there’s actual commentary now, which sounds hilariously compressed but adds some charm.

No link cable? No problem. The single-player season mode saves your progress, and there’s this weirdly addictive trading card collection thing with 250 cards to unlock. Just don’t expect the AI to play like the PS2 version—it’s its own weird, slightly janky beast. Still, for bus rides or waiting rooms, it scratches that baseball itch better than most GBA sports games.
