Play Alleyway Online
You knock a tiny ball back and forth, chipping away at shifting blocks while Mario pops in to cheer when you clear a screen—simple, but weirdly hypnotic.

Alleyway came out for the Game Boy in 1989, developed by Nintendo R&D1. It was one of the early titles that showed what the handheld could do, a straightforward arcade-style game in an era where portable gaming was just getting started. You weren't saving kingdoms or exploring vast worlds; you were just breaking blocks, a simple concept that fit perfectly in your pocket.
You control a small paddle at the bottom of the screen, moving it left and right to bounce a ball upward and destroy all the bricks above. The main goal is to clear each screen of blocks before you run out of lives. Some levels feature bricks that shift slowly across the screen, while others have indestructible blocks that force you to aim your shots carefully. The game starts gently but the pace quickens, and missing the ball becomes easier as you progress. It feels methodical and a little tense, a quiet test of focus where every rebound matters.
