Game Overview

Aretha is a 1990 Game Boy RPG developed by Japan Art Media, a title that quietly appeared among the many cartridges of the era. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, instead offering a familiar top-down adventure that feels very much of its time, built for long sessions with the console's green-tinted screen.

You control a young boy exploring a fantasy world, moving screen by screen through fields, towns, and dungeons. The main goal involves a quest to rescue a kidnapped girl, which pushes you to talk to villagers, gather clues, and slowly uncover the story. Combat is turn-based; when an enemy sprite touches you, the view shifts to a separate battle screen where you select attacks, use items, or try to flee. You'll also collect various key items to progress, often by solving simple environmental puzzles or defeating specific monsters. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes slow, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly in later areas. Playing it feels like patiently untangling a knot, where every small victory actually matters.
