Atomic Runner came out for the Sega Genesis in 1988, developed and published by Data East. It was one of those early titles that really tried to push the hardware, with fast scrolling and a lot of on-screen action that felt ambitious for its time.
You control Chelnov, a character who runs automatically, and your main job is to guide him through side-scrolling stages, blasting an array of robotic enemies. The primary mechanics involve precise jumping across gaps, using a multi-directional shot to hit foes above, below, or behind you, and collecting power-ups to enhance your firepower. The pacing is relentless; you're constantly moving forward, and the difficulty comes from timing your jumps and shots under pressure.
