Avenging Spirit is one of those weird, dark little Game Boy gems that sticks with you. You play as a ghost—murdered by gangsters—who gets resurrected by your girlfriend’s desperate dad. His deal? Save her, or they’ll steal his ghost energy research. Not exactly a cheerful premise, but it works.
The coolest part is possessing enemies—you can jump into 20 different bodies, from thugs with guns to weird sewer mutants, each with their own attacks. But watch your ghost meter; float around too long without a host, and you’re done. The levels are classic side-scrolling chaos—rooftops, factories, even the mob’s hideout—and there’s a twist at the end depending on how things play out. It’s short, but the possession gimmick makes it way more fun than your average run-and-gun.
Definitely a cult favorite for a reason.
