Battle of Kingdom is this weird little Game Boy gem that mixes board game vibes with real-time monster battles. You’re basically trying to protect your kingdom across six stages, moving space by space—sometimes you fight, sometimes you get a lucky chest (or an empty one, because RNG hates us all), and sometimes you just get to shop for more monsters.
You start with 800 points to build your team from 16 monsters, each with their own stats and abilities. Some just hit hard, others mess with enemy stats—I always went for the ones that could poison because watching enemies slowly wither never gets old. Battles play out like a weird mix of strategy and reflexes: your monsters march toward the enemy while you frantically toggle between commands at the bottom of the screen. You can attack, heal, push enemies back, or use special abilities, but everything costs points, so you’re constantly weighing risk vs. reward. And if your monster dies? Gone forever. No take-backs.
The branching paths give you some choice in how you tackle each stage, but no backtracking means you’re locked into your decisions. At least the password system lets you save progress—because trust me, you’ll need it. The game doesn’t pull punches.
It’s janky in that classic Game Boy way, but there’s something weirdly addictive about the mix of tactics and tension. Just don’t get too attached to your monsters.
