Battle Space is one of those Game Boy games that somehow makes a tiny screen feel like an entire warzone. You're just this lone fighter zipping through swarms of enemy ships, and the controls are so responsive that weaving between laser blasts becomes second nature after a few tries. The first time I played, I got wrecked in about 30 seconds—but by the third run, I was hooked on that rush of barely scraping through a bullet hell with 1% health left.
It’s got that perfect arcade balance where everything’s simple (shoot, dodge, survive) but the enemy patterns keep you adapting. The pixel art’s chunky in that satisfying early-Game Boy way, and the sound effects—especially the crunchy explosion noise when you take down a boss—are weirdly satisfying. I’ve lost more than a few bus rides to “just one more attempt” at beating my high score.
