Berzerk came out in 1980 from Stern Electronics, and playing it on MAME today still gives you that raw arcade feel. It was part of that wave of early maze shooters, simple in concept but sharp in execution, where the goal wasn't story but survival. You're dropped into these tight, single-screen rooms with one job: get out alive.
You control a small humanoid figure, moving room to room, shooting robots with your laser while avoiding their return fire. The main objective is to find the exit in each screen before the enemies overwhelm you. Signature mechanics include the deadly walls that electrocute you on contact and the infamous Evil Otto, a bouncing smiley face that cannot be killed and speeds up if you linger. The pacing is frantic; robots shout synthesized threats like "Get the humanoid!" or "Chicken, fight like a robot!" as they home in on your position. It feels tense and claustrophobic, every decision immediate and punishing.
