Bomber King (or Bomber King: Scenario 2 if you're going by its Japanese name) is one of those weird little Game Boy games that takes a familiar idea—Bomberman’s explosive antics—and turns it into something way bigger. Instead of just clearing rooms full of enemies, you’re exploring an overworld, crawling through dungeons, and solving puzzles where bombs are your only tool. Need to break a wall? Bomb. Need to trigger a switch? Bomb. Accidentally trap yourself in a corner? Well… bomb, but regret it immediately.
It’s got that classic 8-bit charm where everything feels simple at first, until you realize how sneaky some of the level designs are. One minute you’re blowing up rocks to find a hidden path, the next you’re backtracking because you missed a key item three screens ago. The RPG-ish quest (something about rescuing a scientist?) is just an excuse to keep bombing your way through increasingly clever stages. If you’ve ever wanted Bomberman to feel more like an adventure, this is the closest you’ll get on a Game Boy.
It’s aged surprisingly well—just don’t expect the screen to be big enough to always see what’s coming.
