Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind came out in 1993 for the Sega Genesis, developed and published by Accolade. It was one of those early mascot platformers that tried to ride the wave of Sonic and Mario, but it had a personality all its own, for better or worse.
You control Bubsy, a bobcat with a smart mouth and a tendency to belly flop onto enemies. The goal is to run and jump through side scrolling stages, collecting balls of yarn while fending off alien invaders. The movement feels loose and floaty, which makes precision platforming a real challenge; you often overshoot platforms or misjudge jumps. Bubsy can perform a limited glide by holding the jump button, and he has a pounce attack to take out foes. The pacing is fast, but the level design can be unforgiving, with cheap enemy placements and bottomless pits. Playing it feels like wrestling with a game that never quite does what you expect.
