Castle of Illusion is one of those Genesis games that just feels like magic—even now. You’re Mickey, but not just any Mickey: you’re a tiny mouse in a massive, shifting castle where every room bends reality. One minute you’re hopping across giant playing cards, the next you’re dodging sentient books in a library. The witch Mizrabel’s voice still creeps me out when she taunts you.
What’s wild is how good the controls are for a 16-bit platformer. Mickey’s jumps have weight but never feel stiff, and throwing apples at enemies stays satisfying no matter how many times you do it. The music? Absolute earworms—especially the toy box level theme. It’s tough in spots (looking at you, clock tower), but never unfair. Just don’t expect to breeze through it in one sitting.
Somehow, it nails that Disney charm without being cutesy. You’ll grin at the dancing mushrooms, then immediately panic when the floor collapses. Still holds up as one of the best Disney platformers ever made.
