Chambers Of Shaolin (1989, Amiga) combines training mini-games (balancing, dodging) with 2D combat. Training performance affects fighting strength. Features level-based progression.
Chambers of Shaolin starts off slow—like, really slow—but in a way that makes sense. You’re a monk-in-training, so before you can throw down in proper fights, you’ve got to grind through these weird, meditative mini-games. Balancing on wobbly tree stumps, kicking at swinging logs, dodging rocks… it’s all strangely satisfying once you get the timing down.
Then, just when you’re getting comfortable, part two hits you with full-on side-scrolling brawls. Suddenly, all that patience pays off—your kicks land harder, your dodges feel sharper. The transition from training to actual combat is surprisingly smooth, even if the controls take some getting used to (this is an Amiga game, after all).
It’s one of those games where the slow start actually makes the payoff better.
