So, Champions of Krynn—if you’ve ever played one of those old SSI gold box AD&D games, this one’s got that same feel but with a Dragonlance twist. You start off thinking the war’s done, the dragonarmies are gone… but of course, things aren’t that simple. Your little band of adventurers gets roped into working for the Solamnic Knights, and before you know it, you’re knee-deep in draconians and dungeons again.
The combat’s that classic top-down turn-based style, and you’ll spend a lot of time crawling through first-person dungeons or wandering the overland map. What makes this one stand out? The Krynn stuff—kender, dwarves who actually have sub-races, and mages who care about moon phases (because of course they do). Picking a cleric of Paladine feels different from a Mishakite, and good luck explaining to your friends why your white-robed mage suddenly can’t cast anything because the moons aren’t aligned right.
It’s janky in that late-’80s way, but if you’re into Dragonlance or just want a solid gold box RPG with some weird setting-specific quirks, this’ll keep you busy for a while.
