Game Overview
Chelnov on the Sega Genesis is one of those weird, frantic shooters that feels like it was beamed in from some alternate '90s arcade dimension. You play as this guy who got turned into an atomic mutant (because of course he did), and now you're sprinting through levels blasting robots with a gun that looks like it was cobbled together from a toaster and a car battery.
The controls take a second to click—you can dash, double jump, and even hover for a bit, which comes in handy when the screen starts filling up with enemy fire. The Japanese version is definitely the way to go; the difficulty still spikes, but at least it doesn’t feel like the game is actively trying to murder you by the second stage.
It’s got that perfect mix of jank and charm—some of the enemy designs are just gloriously bizarre, like whoever drew them was half-asleep at 3 AM. If you’re into fast, chaotic side-scrollers that don’t take themselves too seriously, this one’s a trip.
