Play Chuugaku Eitango 1700 Online

You drill English vocab with pixelated flashcards and simple quizzes—somehow tapping A/B buttons to pick "umbrella" or "library" feels more satisfying than it should on this chunky little cart.

Game Overview

Chuugaku Eitango 1700 is one of those weird little Game Boy carts that makes you go, "Wait, this actually works?" It's basically a vocabulary drill disguised as a game—1700 English words Japanese middle schoolers need to know, but somehow the chunky pixels and beep-boop sounds make memorizing "apple" and "library" weirdly satisfying.

You get multiple-choice quizzes, digital flashcards (complete with that nostalgic flip animation), and a couple of barebones minigames to break up the studying. It's not fancy—just green-on-black text and simple menus—but there's something about the physical buttons and Game Boy's no-nonsense vibe that helps the words stick better than another boring app.

Found mine at a used game shop years ago, and I still boot it up when I need to kill time on the train. The retro charm does half the teaching for you.
