Play Classic Collection Online
Four Genesis games crammed into one cart—you’ll bounce between Alex Kidd’s janky platforming and Gunstar Heroes’ screen-filling chaos while Altered Beast makes you question 90s game design. That pixel art still slaps, though.

Classic Collection for the Sega Genesis, released by Sega in 1994, bundled four of their earlier titles into a single cartridge. It was a straightforward compilation, a common practice at the time, offering a snapshot of the console's library from the late 80s and early 90s. The selection included platformers and an action game, representing a cross-section of what was available on the system before the era of the Sonic series truly took over.
You control different characters across the four games, from the martial arts moves of Alex Kidd to the run-and-gun shooting of Gunstar Heroes. The main objective is simply to progress through each game's levels, defeating enemies and overcoming environmental obstacles. Signature mechanics vary wildly; you might be punching blocks to find items in Alex Kidd, strategically combining weapon types in Gunstar Heroes, or transforming into powerful beasts in Altered Beast. The pacing and difficulty are inconsistent, a direct reflection of the different development eras and design philosophies of the included titles. Playing it feels like flipping through a slightly uneven, but personally meaningful, yearbook of early Genesis efforts.
