Columns III: Taiketsu! Columns World came out in 1994 for the Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive in Japan. It was developed and published by Sega, arriving late in the console's life when puzzle games were still a staple for competitive play. This one stood out by focusing entirely on two player matches, either against a friend or the computer.
You control falling groups of three colored gems, rotating and dropping them to form matches of three or more in a row. The main goal is to outlast your opponent by clearing your own screen while sending extra blocks to theirs with each combo. Key mechanics include the ability to trigger chain reactions for bigger attacks, and special items that can reverse controls or instantly clear sections of the board. Matches start slow but quickly escalate in speed and tension, especially in the higher difficulty settings. It feels like a strategic tug of war where every move counts.
