Game Overview

Crystal Hammer came out for the Amiga in 1988 from reLINE Software GmbH. It was one of many action games on the platform at the time, offering a straightforward take on the brick-breaking genre without much pretense. You just loaded it up and got straight into the action, which was typical for games back then.

You control a paddle at the bottom of the screen, deflecting a ball to break rows of colored bricks. Your goal is to clear each stage by shattering every destructible block while avoiding enemies like worms that crawl across the playfield. Key mechanics include collecting power-ups that drop from broken bricks; these grant abilities like expanding your paddle, adding extra balls, or turning your paddle into a shooter for a short time. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty ramps up noticeably with the introduction of unbreakable grey bricks and more aggressive enemies. It feels satisfying to watch the screen clear brick by brick, though one missed ball can quickly undo your progress.
