Dai Makaimura, known as Ghouls 'n Ghosts in the West, came out on the Sega Genesis in 1991, a Capcom release that brought their arcade style home. It was part of that wave of tough, visually sharp action games that really pushed the 16-bit hardware, demanding a lot from players who were used to simpler challenges.
You control the knight Arthur, moving screen by screen through haunted lands to rescue the princess from demons. Your main tools are a lance you can throw and various secondary weapons found in treasure chests, like daggers or axes. The game is brutally difficult, with enemies swarming from all sides and platforming that punishes any misstep. Finishing a level requires memorizing enemy patterns and perfecting your jumps, and it feels like a genuine test of patience and skill when you finally break through.
