The controls take a minute to click (hold R to strafe, why didn't I figure that out sooner?), but once they do, the combat has this janky rhythm that grows on you.
Honestly half the fun is deciphering what's happening through the Engrish translation—apparently my robot's mission involves "defeating the evil data flowers"? But that's part of the charm.
