Dig Dug 2 came out in 1985, and I usually play it through MAME these days. It was developed and published by Namco, following up on the original arcade hit. It fits right into that mid-80s era where sequels tried new ideas rather than just refining what worked before.
You control the character Dig Dug, tasked with clearing each island screen of enemies by strategically cracking the ground beneath them. The main objective is to cause sections of land to break off and drop foes into the water, while avoiding their attacks. Key mechanics include using your pump to inflate enemies until they burst, and carefully planning where to drill to split the terrain without trapping yourself. The pacing is deliberate; you need to judge each crack to avoid being overwhelmed. It feels tense and clever when your plan works and the screen clears.
