I picked up Digimon: Battle Spirit 2 on Game Boy Advance back in 2003, a time when Bandai was putting out a lot of solid handheld fighters. It wasn't trying to be the deepest game on the system, but it had a certain charm that fit right in with the era's portable brawlers.
You choose a Digimon and fight through a series of one-on-one arena battles against other monsters. The main goal is to collect orbs your opponent drops when hit; gather enough and your Digimon evolves temporarily, boosting your attack power. Matches are fast and chaotic, relying heavily on quick reflexes and learning which of your character's special moves connect best. Some fights can feel lopsided depending on your pick, but landing a win, especially after a well-timed evolution, delivers a genuine rush. It feels like a quick, messy scrap that's over almost as soon as it begins.
