Dinotopia: The Timestone Pirates is one of those GBA games I stumbled onto years ago and still think about—it’s got this weirdly cozy mix of sword-swinging action and dino-riding exploration. You start off in this vibrant little village where humans and dinosaurs just... hang out, and before long, you’re chasing pirates through jungles and ruins, solving puzzles with a mix of platforming and light combat.
The isometric view gives it that old-school charm, and the Mode7 effects make the world feel bigger than it should on a tiny screen. At first, I kept getting stuck on the block-pushing puzzles (why are pirates always obsessed with ancient mechanisms?), but once you get the rhythm of switching between human and dino abilities, it clicks. Also, riding a Protoceratops into battle never gets old.
It’s definitely a product of its time—some janky hitboxes here, a cryptic puzzle there—but that’s part of the appeal. If you’ve got a soft spot for forgotten GBA adventures, this one’s worth dusting off.
