I first played Donkey Kong Jr. through MAME, emulating that original 1982 Nintendo arcade release. It's the direct sequel to Donkey Kong, flipping the script by making you play as the ape's son. It fits right into that early 80s era of simple, single-screen platformers that were more about pattern recognition than story.
You control Junior, a small ape trying to rescue his father from a cage. The goal is to climb chains and vines across four distinct stages, avoiding enemies like Nitpickers and Snapjaws. Your main action is grabbing and throwing fruit to temporarily stun these creatures. The climbing itself is a core mechanic; you have to time your ascents carefully, and the jumping feels deliberately weighty and imprecise. The difficulty ramps up quickly, especially with the tricky spring platforms in the second stage. It feels like a tense, physical puzzle where every successful climb is a small victory.
