Game Overview

Duel Masters (J)(Rising Sun) is one of those GBA games I stumbled on years ago and still go back to when I want quick, chaotic card battles. It’s got that same rush as Magic or Pokémon TCG, but with its own weird little personality—some of the creature designs are just gloriously over-the-top, like a dragon fused with a tank or a wizard who looks like he’s made of molten lava.

The Rising Sun version adds a bunch of exclusive cards that change up strategies—I remember getting wrecked by this one fire-based combo until I figured out how to counter it. The game doesn’t hold your hand, but after a few matches, you start seeing how everything clicks together. And yeah, the pixel art for the cards? Way more detailed than you’d expect from a GBA title.

It’s the kind of game where you tell yourself “okay, last match” at 1 AM, and suddenly it’s 3. If you’ve got a soft spot for retro card games with a bit of anime nonsense thrown in, this one’s a solid pick.
