Play ESPN International - Winter Sports (E)(TrashMan) Online

Sliding down slopes feels weirdly slippery, nailing figure skating moves takes practice, and somehow speed skating becomes an obsession despite the jank. Pure early 2000s handheld charm with all its rough edges.

Game Overview

ESPN International - Winter Sports on the GBA is one of those weird little sports compilations that somehow works despite itself. You’ve got downhill skiing that feels like you’re sliding on butter, figure skating with awkward button combos, and snowboarding that’s actually kinda fun once you get the hang of it. The graphics are what you’d expect from a mid-tier GBA title—blocky but charming in a "we tried our best" way.

What surprised me was how weirdly addictive the speed skating event is. It’s just mashing buttons, but something about the janky physics makes you want to keep retrying for a better time. And yeah, the controls take some getting used to—don’t expect Wii Sports levels of polish here. But if you’ve got nostalgia for early 2000s handheld sports games, this one’s a solid time-killer between bus rides or before bed. Just don’t blame me when you rage-quit the slalom event.
