ExoSquad came out for the Sega Genesis in 1995, developed by Appaloosa Interactive. It was one of those games that felt like a direct translation of its source material, a cartoon series about a war between humans and genetically engineered Neosapiens. On a console filled with platformers and fighters, it stood out as a methodical, mission based action game.

You control an E-Frame pilot, a soldier in a powerful mechanized suit, and you complete a series of missions across different planets. The main objective is to push back the Neosapien invasion, which involves a lot of screen by screen horizontal shooting. Your signature mechanics are managing your weapon heat gauges to avoid a temporary shutdown and switching between different exo-suits, each with unique weapons and flight capabilities. The pacing is deliberate, almost tactical, as you learn enemy patterns and carefully time your shots between their attacks. It feels like a tough, thoughtful war of attrition where every shot and dodge matters.
