Game Overview

Famicom Mini - Vol 8 - Mappy for the GBA is basically the arcade classic shrunk down to fit in your pocket—and it still holds up. You play as Mappy, this tiny cop mouse trying to reclaim stolen goods from a gang of cats (because of course it’s cats). The whole thing plays out in these maze-like rooms where you’re bouncing on trampolines to reach higher floors while dodging feline goons. It sounds simple, but those cats get fast after a few rounds.

The pixel art’s bright and crisp, and the music’s that perfect kind of old-school catchy—you’ll hum it for days. What surprised me was how well the controls translated to the GBA; the trampoline jumps feel just right, even on the small screen. It’s one of those games where you lose track of time because you keep saying, “One more try…” right after getting swarmed by Meowkies.

If you’ve played the original, it’s pure nostalgia. If you haven’t, it’s a weird, charming little time capsule. Either way, watch out for the black cat—he’s a nightmare.
