Game Overview

Fleet Commander VS was a 1990 Game Boy release from developer and publisher Taito. It arrived during the handheld's early years, a time when simple, competitive two player games were finding an audience on the single screen device. This title fit right into that niche, offering a portable version of the classic guessing game formula.

You control a fleet of five ships, placing them on a hidden grid before taking turns calling out coordinates to bomb your opponent's side of the screen. The main objective is to be the first to locate and destroy every enemy vessel. Its signature mechanics include the initial secret ship placement, the methodical process of elimination hunting, and the use of different ship sizes that change how many hits they can take. The pacing is slow and thoughtful, a deliberate back and forth that can suddenly spike in tension when you finally get a hit. It feels like a quiet, portable battle of wits that is perfectly suited to a long car ride.
