Game Overview

Freeze is a 1984 arcade game by Stern Electronics, playable today through MAME. It arrived during a period when arcade cabinets were experimenting with novel concepts, often built around a single, clever gimmick. This one is built entirely on the idea of ice and the frustration of losing control.

You control a small, parka-clad character sliding across single-screen ice rinks. Your objective is to clear each stage by freezing all the roaming snowmen and yeti-like enemies. You do this by maneuvering your sliding character to line up with a foe, then pressing a button to shoot a freezing ray. The main challenge is the momentum-based movement; you glide with every step and must plan your path to avoid bumping into enemies, which temporarily stuns you. The pacing is frantic, as thawed enemies quickly repopulate the screen. It feels like a constant, slippery battle against the clock and the physics of your own movement.
