Gradius Advance is basically the GBA saying, "Hey, remember arcades?" but then shoving all that nostalgia into your backpack. At first glance, it's classic Gradius—same satisfying power-up chime, same terrifying screen full of bullets, same little "Options" drones that make you feel overpowered until the game humbles you again. But then you hit the first boss and realize they tweaked the patterns just enough to keep you on your toes.
The levels somehow feel both familiar and new—like they took the best bits from older games, then redesigned them for quick bursts of play between bus stops. (Though good luck putting it down after one level.) My only gripe? That classic Gradius difficulty is still brutal—lose your power-ups at the wrong moment, and you might as well restart. But when you finally thread through a bullet hell section or melt a boss with a maxed-out laser? Pure handheld joy.
If you’ve got a soft spot for shmups, this cartridge’s worth digging out of a bargain bin.
