Gynoug (or Wings of Wor, depending on where you played it) is one of those Genesis shooters that sticks with you—mostly because it’s gorgeous and punishing in equal measure. You play as Wor, this weird angel-demon hybrid with stretchy wings, flying through these surreal, gothic levels filled with floating eyeballs, screaming faces, and bosses that look like they crawled out of a heavy metal album cover.
The controls are simple—shoot, charge shot, dodge—but the screen gets absolutely packed with bullets and grotesque enemies. First time I played, I got wrecked by the second stage’s giant worm thing because I kept trying to face-tank everything. Pro tip: Wor’s wings aren’t just for show—they block shots if you position them right.
It’s got that classic “90s hard” vibe where you’ll die a lot, but the music and art are so weirdly beautiful that you keep hitting continue. The final boss, The Destroyer, is exactly as over-the-top as the name suggests. If you like your shooters with a side of body horror and a killer soundtrack, this one’s worth dusting off the Genesis for.
