Swing, roll, and collect Kantele pieces as Hachiemon in maze-like stages, using his lips to navigate gaps and tackle enemies on your way to the exit.
Hachiemon is a 2003 Game Boy Advance release from developer KID and publisher MTO. It arrived late in the system's life, a time when developers were still finding inventive ways to use the hardware. The game stands out for its unusual protagonist and quirky mechanics, offering something different from the more traditional platformers and RPGs of the era.
You control Hachiemon, a round, lip-heavy character who navigates maze-like stages. Your main goal is to collect all the Kantele pieces in each level to open the exit. You use his large lips like a grappling hook to swing across gaps, pull yourself up to platforms, and even attack enemies by whipping them. Rolling builds momentum and lets you cross wide spaces, but overdoing it leaves Hachiemon dazed and vulnerable for a moment. The pacing is deliberate, with an emphasis on careful swinging and timing over speed. The levels demand observation, and a wrong move can mean falling and having to climb back up. Getting hit prompts a low, grumbled "Kantele" from Hachiemon, a small touch that adds charm to the trial and error. It feels like solving a physical puzzle with a strange, unwieldy tool that slowly becomes intuitive.
