Game Overview
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on GBA is one of those rare movie tie-ins that actually gets it right. You start off in Diagon Alley—classic top-down pixel art, that familiar chiptune rendition of Hedwig’s Theme—and within minutes you’re flicking Leviosa charms at suitcases and dodging Malfoy’s smug remarks. The spell-switching is way smoother here than in the first two games; no more menu-digging mid-battle when a Dementor shows up.
What surprised me was how much personality they packed into the sprite work. Hermione’s little hair bounce when she casts spells, Ron’s exaggerated panic runs—it’s all weirdly charming. And yeah, switching between the trio actually matters: Hermione’s logic puzzles, Ron’s Scabbers-summoning (don’t ask), Harry’s Patronus moments. The Whomping Willow sections still give me mild trauma though.
It’s not perfect—some of the prefect patrol stealth bits drag—but for a licensed GBA game? Way better than it had any right to be. Just bring headphones for the Shrieking Shack theme; that 8-bit wail sticks with you.
