Hikaru no Go 2 came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, developed by KCE Studios and published by Konami. It was part of that wave of anime adaptations on the GBA, a time when you could carry a full board game in your pocket. The game follows the story of Hikaru Shindo as he learns the ancient game of Go, guided by the spirit of a master player from the Heian era.
You control Hikaru, moving him through various locations like his school, the Go salon, and tournaments to challenge opponents. The main objective is to improve your rank by winning matches and solving tsumego puzzles. Signature mechanics include placing stones on the 19x19 grid, reviewing match replays to analyze mistakes, and occasionally receiving advice from Sai, the ghostly mentor. The pacing is deliberate, with matches that can stretch from a few minutes to much longer if you're facing a tough rival; the difficulty ramps up noticeably as you progress beyond beginner opponents. It feels like slowly untangling a complex knot, one thoughtful move at a time.
