Hokuto no Ken: Fist came out for the Game Boy in 1990, published by Toei Animation. It was one of those early portable attempts to bring a popular anime brawler to a small screen, trading flash for function. You control Kenshiro, the series' stoic martial artist, wandering a post apocalyptic landscape in search of his kidnapped love, Yuria. The game plays out across a series of side scrolling stages where you punch and kick your way through waves of thugs. Defeating certain enemies rewards you with scrolls that teach you special techniques, like the famous Hokuto Hyakuretsu Ken, which you can unleash with a button combination once your spirit gauge is full. The pacing is deliberate, the enemy patterns repetitive, and the difficulty can feel unforgiving due to stiff controls and limited mobility. It feels like a grind, each victory earned through memorization more than reflex.

Your main goal is straightforward: clear each area, defeat the boss waiting at the end, and move ever closer to rescuing Yuria. The combat hinges on landing precise combos; mess up the timing and you leave yourself open to cheap hits from off screen. Exploration is minimal, focused mostly on moving right and occasionally backtracking if you miss a power up. Boss fights demand patience, learning their tells and striking during brief openings. Despite the clunky movement, there's a tactile satisfaction in executing a special move and seeing an enemy burst apart.
