Hunt for Red October came out for the Game Boy in 1993, developed by Beam Software. It was one of those licensed games from the era that tried to capture a movie's tension on a handheld, a time when stealth and simulation were still finding their feet on small screens.
You control the Red October itself, a massive Typhoon-class submarine trying to defect to the United States. The goal is to navigate through hostile waters without being detected by Soviet forces. You manage your depth, speed, and oxygen levels while monitoring sonar contacts that could be friend or foe. The game plays out screen by screen, with a constant need for silent running to avoid giving away your position. It's a slow, deliberate experience that punishes mistakes harshly; one wrong move can bring a cascade of depth charges or torpedoes your way. Playing it feels like holding your breath for a very long time.
