Hyper Dunk came out for the original Game Boy, a sports title from TOSE that tried to capture some of the arcade basketball energy on the small screen. It was part of that wave of portable games where developers were still figuring out how to translate fast, physical sports into something that worked on a monochrome display with limited buttons.
You control a team of two players, switching between them to move up the court, pass, and shoot. The main goal is to outscore the computer or a friend in two player mode. Key mechanics include timing your jumps for blocks and rebounds, and a special turbo button for a short burst of speed that drains your stamina. The pacing is frantic, with the AI applying constant defensive pressure that makes every possession a struggle. It feels like a scrappy, chaotic playground game where a single steal can completely turn the momentum.
