Ikari no Yousai 2 came out for the Game Boy in 1992, published by SNK. It was part of that wave of portable games trying to squeeze deep, strategic experiences into a pocket-sized format, a time when even simple graphics could hide surprisingly complex challenges.
You command a small squad of soldiers through grid-based maps, fighting enemy troops in turn-based combat. Your main goal is to capture the enemy base while defending your own, using infantry, tanks, and artillery with distinct movement and attack ranges. Positioning is everything; a misplaced unit can be surrounded and destroyed quickly. The game moves deliberately, demanding careful planning with each turn, and the difficulty is unrelenting even from early stages. It feels tense and cerebral, rewarding patience and punishing mistakes without a second thought.
