International Rugby came out on the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed by Rage Software and published by Electronic Arts. It was one of the few rugby games available on the system, arriving during a period when sports titles were rapidly improving in both graphics and gameplay complexity.
You control a full team of fifteen players, directing their movements and actions across a side-scrolling pitch. The main objective is to outscore your opponent by either scoring tries or kicking goals. Key mechanics include timing your passes carefully to avoid interceptions, and executing well-aimed kicks for territory or conversions. The pacing is fast, with a steep difficulty curve that punishes sloppy play. It feels genuinely satisfying when a planned move comes together and you break through the defensive line.
