Play Invaders-mame Online
Dodge pixel-perfect bombs while picking off rows of aliens that speed up as they descend—your little ship feels way too small when they’re halfway down the screen. That marching sound still gets my pulse up after all these years.
I first played Space Invaders through MAME, the arcade emulator that lets you run the original 1978 Taito code. It came out during a time when arcades were loud, crowded places, and this game was everywhere; you couldn't miss its simple, green-on-black look and that relentless, thumping soundtrack. It wasn't the first shooter, but it definitely set a template that a lot of others followed.
You control a small laser cannon that only moves side to side along the bottom of the screen. Your job is to stop a formation of aliens from reaching the bottom by shooting them one at a time. The aliens march back and forth, slowly dropping closer with each pass, and they also speed up as you destroy more of them, which really tightens the pressure. You have four stationary bunkers for cover, but they get chipped away by both your shots and the enemy's. The whole game is a race against their descent, and it feels tense and methodical, like you're holding back a tide that gets faster the more you succeed.
