Game Overview

Italia 1990 came out on the Amiga in 1990 from Codemasters, right in the middle of that console's heyday. It was one of many football games at the time, but it stood out for its focus on the World Cup that year. You didn't get a full roster of teams, just eight national sides to pick from, which felt a bit limited even then.

You control all the players on your chosen team, moving them around the pitch in a top-down view. The main goal is simple: score more goals than the opponent. The game includes throw-ins, penalties, fouls, corners, and goal kicks, which gave it a more complete feel than some other arcade-style football titles. Matches can be set from 5 to 90 minutes, and you can play with up to four people, which made for some chaotic sessions. It also has a training mode with various drills to practice shooting and passing. The pacing is generally quick, though the computer can put up a decent fight on higher difficulties. It feels straightforward and fun, especially with friends, even if it lacks the depth of some other sports sims.
